Description
In 1882 the Passamaquoddy Ferry Company was formed by Julius Wolff, a pioneer of the sardine industry, and Bion M. Pike, long time sardine mogul and businessman of Lubec who later became sole owner of the company. Initially using sailing vessels, the ferry service in Lubec, North Lubec, Eastport, and Welshpool on Campobello Island used steamships exclusively by the 1890s. The first of the then-modern ships was the "Lubec," followed by the "Eastport" and "Campobello." Here the latter has attracted a variety of sightseers.
According to the article “Notes on the Maritime History of Lubec” by Frank P. Adams, Sr., in 1901 the “Campobello” was 63.4 feet in length, 16.5 foot beam, and drew 6 feet of water. Adams believed that this ship was a much-rebuilt 1866 “Spray” from Bath, Maine, later the “General Leavitt.” The vessel was removed from ferry service in 1915 and served in various capacities until 1956. “As ‘Campobello,’ ex-‘General Leavitt,’ ex-‘Spray,’ writes Adams, “she was in continuous registration for ninety years.” Adams adds that “Mr. Sumner T. Pike of Lubec wrote me 21 May 1963. ‘I agree completely that the ‘Campobello’ was rebuilt from the ‘General Leavitt,’ which in turn was made over from ‘Spray.’ The last job was probably a heavy one, and of course I don’t know where the Bureau of Navigation draws the line between a repair job and a new boat. However, I remember the work being done on the beach just south of the Gun Rock Factory, which is now the Peacock factory, and I think it was 1901...’”
