This is a daguerreotype of Clara Shepherd, ca. 1845.
Because the exposure time for a daguerreotype was about 20 seconds, sitting for one's portrait was a slightly arduous process. Sitters had to remain still for the length of the exposure, often resulting in uncomfortable or unnatural expressions on their faces.
