Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), who lived in London and worked as a lawyer for a railroad management firm, wrote to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce (1810-1901) of Portland thanking her for her expressions of sympathy on the death of his daughter.
Eliza Pierce (1859-1877) died of meningitis at age 18.
She and her siblings, Josiah Jr. and Alexander, had gone to London in 1874 to live with their father. Previously, they had lived with their mother, Martha Lander Pierce, in Portland. Martha Pierce died in 1873. Alexander died in 1874 of diphtheria.
Pierce wrote to his aunt, "My dear child has been very happy here in her growth into perfect Christian beauty -- and was so gently, patient, resigned and affectionate in her very trying illness ..."
