Description
Arrival of the Eastern Steamship Company’s Cumberland was an occasion to elicit excitement. The passenger ship functioned as primary transportation until full development of the automobile, because railroads never served Lubec. The diamond-shaped walking beam transferred reciprocal motion of the steam engine pistons to the necessary rotary motion of the side paddlewheel. The ship's name may be seen on the paddlewhell. The prefix “SS” before a ship’s name typically meant “Steam Ship,” but was often restricted to propeller-driven vessels, then standing for “Screw Steamer.”
