Water Street at School Street, Lubec, ca. 1905, ca. 1905

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

This image offers a look at downtown life in Lubec shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Note the wooden boardwalks and “dirt” street along with utility poles proving electricity and telephone service. A cat strolls onto School Street, a boy rides his bicycle, while another bike leans unused against the Vose & Thayer store (dealer in hats and clothing, Maine Register 1904-05) to the left. This building will retain its corner door and become known as the “Rexall Store” later in the century. The extreme righthand building bears a W. B. Dodge Company sign; a lower projecting sign appears to read “McCall Patterns.”
