Description
The image shows early 20th century homes on Main Street in Presque Isle before the street was paved.
The town was settled in 1819 when the area was part of Washington County. Aroostook became a county in 1839.
The town's population grew in the early 20th century, aided by the Aroostook State Normal School, a Carnegie library, a state-operated tuberculosis sanatorium, a public hospital, and new businesses.
