Description

George Washington Pierce (1805-1835), on a trip west looking for opportunities for his law practice, wrote to his brother, Josiah of Gorham, commenting on the nature of travelers' letters and his 15-day stay in Cincinnati.

He had expected to stay two or three days.

He wrote his letter from Louisville, which he described as "one of the most refined cities in all of the West." He said it was wealthier than Cincinnati, although the population was smaller. He commented especially on the kindness and hospitality.

Pierce also noted that since leaving Washington at the end of December, he had seen only one "handsome and fascinating woman."
