Description
A colorized postcard, printed in Germany, shows the steam ferry, Hercules, of the People's Ferry Company, carrying Maine Central Railroad passenger and freight cars across the Kennebec River from Bath to Woolwich.
The Hercules was built in Bath in 1892, by the New England Ship Building Company and Bath Iron Works. The Hercules operated as the only train ferry from 1892 to 1909, when it became back-up for the Fernando Gorges, which could carry locomotives as well as train cars.
The Hercules remained in service until 1927, when the Carlton Bridge was built.
This style of postcard, divided-back, printed in color in Germany, was produced from 1907-1914.
