Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire, serving in the U.S. Congress, wrote to his distant cousin and friend, George W. Pierce of Portland, commenting on his friendship with fellow U.S. Representative Francis O.J. Smith of Maine, also a friend of George Pierce. All were Democrats.
