John Neal letter about writing career, 1816

John Neal, a native of Portland living in Baltimore, wrote to his mother, Rachel, in Portland about his optimism at earning a living as a write.

Neal noted that, although he was destitute, he was working on a novel and some of his writing had received good reviews.
