Description
Moulding plane. Pollack indicates Morrill is known to have been making planes in Bangor, ME, as early as 1832. and is one of boomtown Bangor, Maines most important and prolific planemakers. One of several Morrill's in the museum collection.
Size: 9 3/8" long, 1" with a deeply cut groove 1" wide.
Markings: "B. MORRILL, BANGOR" and on the blade the mark "_________ SORBY".
A plane is a tool consisting of a flat-bottomed stock with a cutting iron held in a fixed position relative to the bottom of the stock. The purpose of this tool is to shave small pieces from the surface of a workpiece, reducing it to the desired thickness. A moulding plane has a contoured bottom used to cut any of the many shapes of moulding.
