The first fashion plate published by Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of The Ladies' Magazine.
She objected to publishing images of London and Paris fashions that were unrealistic for American women, so published a plate with the urging that readers "Look Here Upon this Picture." She wanted women to critique the fashions and adapt them, rather than imitate them.
