Black side-lace half boots, Portland, ca. 1840

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Straight lasted shoes (shoes made from a straight mold) were rectangular and flat, even with a slight heel. While these silk, ankle-height half boots may appear too delicate for out of doors, they were likely worn as walking boots. A slight leather heel added lift, while a side tie provided accessibility, but otherwise, functionality was lost to fashion.

Dating from sometime between 1825 and 1850, the boots are associated with the Wadsworth and Longfellow families of Portland.
