Lake George, Liberty, ca. 1915

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

The St. George River, Lake St. George, and Haystack Mountain are prominent features in the town of Liberty. Farms dotted the landscape into the 20th century. The lake shore and islands have long been appealing places for summer camps.

The St. George River begins at the dam under Pinnacle Road. The Channel runs from the dam up to Little Lake St. George. Beyond is Lake St. George with two of its islands, Millstone and Green, visible.

Looking down from Haystack Mountain, the farmhouse on the right of the road, one of the oldest settler houses in Liberty, was originally the home of Timothy Copp. The small buildings at the bottom of Haystack Mountain at the dam and along the Channel were boat houses.

Copp's home is gone and the fields have grown up. The first and third homes on the left remain in 2022, but fire consumed the middle house in 2001. In the 21st century, dozens of houses, most of them originally summer camps, occupy the point of land just beyond the Channel and the shore.
