Phebe Cole Townsend of Alexander owned this dress as a young women, prior to her death at only 18 years-old in 1865.

The vivid blue color of this silk taffeta dress was likely the product of the emerging chemical dye industry. Other features of the dress include a pointed waist bodice with long trumpet sleeves, edged with black Cluny lace and jet glass beadwork.
