Description
In 1951, Maine General Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary merged to form Maine Medical Center. To accommodate the growing hospital, a new building was required. When construction began in 1954, Arsenal Street was closed and the building constructed on top of it. Additionally, nine Bramhall Street houses were purchased and demolished. As the opening of the new facility neared, patients put off elective surgery so they could be among the first to receive treatment at the new Maine Medial Center.
