Sister Claire and Sister M. Marcia, Little Diamond Island, 1950

Sister Claire and Sister M. Marcia were part of the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic religious order which began in Ireland during the early 19th century. The Sisters of Mercy first came to Maine in 1865, first at Bangor, and eventually Portland by 1873. The Sisters of Mercy ran a summer camp on Little Diamond Island for the children of Portland, where this photo was taken.

The Sisters of Mercy were integral to the founding and operations of The Queen's Hospital, later known as Mercy Hospital.
