Description
In his letter to Governor Israel Washburn Jr. dated August 15, 1862, Dr. John Manson (1831-1885) of Pittsfield accepted the position of surgeon for his local area, providing references and questioned whether other physicians to Civil War regiments were drafted.
In a subsequent letter on September 9, 1862, Manson explained to the governor that he declines the position as surgeon for two reasons: "1st circumstances connected with my business, which I could not possibly overcome, made it next to impossible for me to serve then. 2nd I felt unwilling to serve unless I could have an assistant in whom I could place implicit confidence and consequently must have been one with whom I was acquainted personally. As to the first I have so arranged my business that I can now leave at a week's notice and am willing to waive the matter of assistant, should you see fit & proper to give me one of the nine months regiments."
He was mustered into the 24th Regiment at Augusta on September 20, 1862.
