Masonic symbol with Odd Fellows emblem, Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, 2014

Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

The embellishment detail from a grave marker at Evergreen Cemetery shows the Square and Compass joined together. It is the most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry.

They are architects' tools and are used in Masonic rituals as emblems to teach symbolic lessons, for example : "The Square, to square our actions: the compass to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind."

The three linked rings below it are symbols of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, also know as "The Three Link Fraternity." The rings stand for Friendship, Love and Truth, and are often found on the tombstones and flag holders.
