Description
As Maine began to plan for a phased reopening from the civil State of Emergency declared by Governor Janet Mills on March 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, four stages were established to gradually ease restrictions in accordance with safety protocols recommended by the Center for Disease Control.
Stage One, which began implementation on May 1, 2020, included the requirement that cloth face coverings be worn in all public locations where six feet of physical distancing would be difficult to maintain.
Located on the busy corner of Congress and State Streets in Portland, a mask was placed on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to encourage the following of this Stage One regulation. Formerly known as State Street Square, this corner was renamed Longfellow Square at the dedication of this bronze and granite monument in 1888, six years after the poet’s passing.
