Sen. Hannibal Hamlin of Maine wrote to George F. Shepley of Portland, the judge of the 1st circuit court, asking that Shepley consider leaving Hamlin's son, Charles, in the position of register of bankruptcy in the 5th District.
Hamlin wrote that he heard there was interest in appointing someone else to the post that his son had been filling for some time. Shepley was in charge of making the appointment.
Hamlin said his son's other law business had diminished because of the time he spent on the bankruptcy cases and he could see no value in making a change in the position.
