Mishna record book, Portland, 1901

Contributed by Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh

Description

A Chevra Mishnayos -- or study group -- was organized at the same time the Shaarey Tphiloh Synagogue in Portland was begun. Members -- all men -- studied holy tracts morning and evening with as many as 50 or 60 in attendance.

The record book, with the cover in Yiddish, reflects the Eastern European roots of most of Portland's Jewish community at the turn of the 20th century.

When all six tracts of the Mishnayos were completed, a Grand Siyum was held to honor the cycle of study.
