The Fifth Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service in June 1861, only months after the beginning of hositlities.
The regiment consisted of 1,046 troops, with 500 added later. Most were from southern and central Maine.
Three of the ten companies in the regiment were composed of men from Portland, thus earning the regiment the nickname the Forest City Regiment.
