Maine supplied a huge number of soldiers to the Union Army during the Civil War -- some 700,000 -- and responded after the war by building monuments to soldiers who had served and soldiers who had died in the epic American struggle.
The Sanitary Commission, formed soon after the Civil War began in the spring of 1861, dealt with the health, relief needs, and morale of soldiers and their families. The Maine Agency helped families and soldiers with everything from furloughs to getting new socks.
William Bayley of Falmouth (Portland) was a soldier in the Continental Army, seeing service at Ticonderoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth Court House, and Saratoga, among other locations. His letters home to his mother reveal much about the economic hardships experienced by both soldiers and those at home.
Maine's participation in the Civil War is legendary: heroes and heroines, a huge per capita participation rate, nurses, and homefront activities, as well as post-war remembrances. These pages pull together resources from Maine Memory Network and Maine History Online that explore and illuminate aspects of Maine and the Civil War.
An extensive history of a small central Maine town as compiled by team members from Guilford Historical Society and Piscataquis Community Middle School, with input from Guilford Memorial Library, Guilford Economic Development Board, and the Guilford’s town office. Manufacturing, festive events, historic buildings, notable veterans, and education, are covered in depth.
The Downeast community's history as presented by a broad-based team of representatives from Surry Elementary School and Surry Historical Society. Topics covered include the Surry Opera House and Surry Playhouse, the Surry Village School and education over time in the community, sawmills, and early property owner Phebe Fowler. Students scanned and transcribed a large number of the items digitized for the project.
