Description
Architecture commission for H. H. Hay & Sons at 256-262 Middle Street in Portland, ME, 1890–1948. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens and Albert Winslow Cobb Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.
H.H. Hay Company, located at the convergence of Congress and Free Streets, in a flat-iron building. It was established in 1841 by Henry H. Hay as a wholesale and retail drug business, dealing also in paints, oils, and dyestuffs. After Hay's death in 1895 the business was carried on by his sons under name: H.H. Hay & Sons. The drug store went out of business in the 1970s.
