Description
A finished granite column being transported by horse-drawn sled from the Hallowell Granite Works quarry down the hill to the train station for shipping in March 1897.
This is one of nine columns lathe-turned for the Illinois Trust Company building in Chicago.
The photo was taken at the top of steep Winthrop Hill with its potential for serious accidents.
Each column measured 30' 6" long with a diameter of 3' 11".
