Description

Published by the Portland Press Herald the following day, this image depicts the intensity of the fire that consumed the Grafton Lumber Mill at 8:30 p.m. on March 20th, 1963. Saco Steel owned many gas tanks which detonated inside of the four story mill building, shattering and blowing out windows. Two firemen are shown to be rolling out hose in order to extinguish the blaze which was rolling out of the windows of the building. The elevator tower stands to the left of the image, showing how the top two floors have been completely destroyed by this point.
