CCC 178th, Bog Brook Forest Fire Crew, Flagstaff Camp, 1930s

Contributed by Maine Conservation Corps

Description

This photograph depicts the Flagstaff crew, 178th company, of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The back of the photograph reads "Bog Brook Forest Fire." The C.C.C. was active from 1933 until 1942.

Francis Goodwin, of Madison, Maine sent this photograph to Norman Wetherington in 1993. Weathering collected memories of C.C.C. members in Maine, and coordinated CCC reunions. He is the author of "In the Public Interest: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Maine."

The town of Flagstaff Maine no longer exists. The town was physically abandoned and dismantled (and legally disincorporated) in 1950 to allow for the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Dead River, which enlarged Flagstaff Lake and submerged the site of the settlement.
