Bangor Rye Bread Bakery entrance, ca. 1976

Contributed by Raymond H. Fogler Library

Description

This photograph shows an entrance to the Bangor Rye Bread Bakery, a business located on Hancock Street in Bangor, Maine.

Although several proprietors are listed in various Bangor city directories -- including Barnett Kamenkovitz and Samuel Levoot (1927), Harry Cohen (1939), Gertrude Cohen (1951), and co-ownership of Reuben and Richard "Dick" Cohen (1957) -- by the 1970s, the establishment was closely associated with Reuben and Clara Cohen, parents of William S. Cohen, former United States Representative (1973-1978), Senator (1979-1996), and Secretary of Defense (1997-2001).

Many of the buildings in this area along Hancock Street were torn down in the late 1970s as a part of an urban renewal movement. The steeple of St. John's Catholic Church, which still stands, appears in the background of the photograph.
