Description

In this letter, Sarah's cousin, Theresa, appears to be gently chastising her for some unseemly, or "unladylike", behavior. Theresa's admonition provides insight into a mid-19th century ideal of feminine temperament. Sarah Tarbox was born January, 7, 1823 and was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, later known as "Squire" Tarbox. Samuel Tarbox was a wealthy fish merchant and gentleman farmer who played an important role in the early development and governing of Westport. Sarah was educated at Mrs. Fields School in Topsham, and became a teacher in 1841.
