Description

This is a picture taken around 1890 of some individuals picnicking at the shores of Big Lake on the property of the Babcock Estate in Grand Lake Stream. Around the turn of the century the Babcock estate was a popular place for locals and tourists to visit for picnics.

Babcock Estate was built about 1883 and originally known as Reed Estate after Nathan S. Reed who commissioned it. Reed was a swindler that skipped town in 1888 after making money selling land for a fictitious community.
