Description
A letter to "Charlie" discusses the charges against Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, a lawyer from Maine who had been relieved of his command of the Division of Eastern Virginia for the Union Army. The letter, from South Boston (possibly Virginia), may have been sent to Capt. Charles Thornton, an aide to Shepley. It speculates on the reason for the charges and the role Gen. Benjamin Butler, who had been relieved of his command a month earlier, might have played. Shepley kept the letter among his papers, along with official documents about the incidents.
