Horace W. Shaylor of Portland wrote the Book of Alphabets for upper level grammar school classes.
Shaylor believed students needed a book with a "few standard alphabets, so arranged as to be copied with profit: first, with a view to familiarizing pupils with good types of letters; and secondly, to show some applications of the letters in a practical way."
