Description

The caption reads, "The Old Friar, off Eastport, Maine." This rock formation is located on the edge of Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada, but can be seen from Eastport, Maine. A landmark for sailors, the following lines were written about the "Old Friar" in 1888:

"Some doffed their hats to the Friar gray, And said, 'A penny for your thoughts to-day! You look so wise. Have you nothing to say? Give us a speech as we sit on the beach…But I am a Friar old and gray, And keep my vigils night and day, Over the waters of 'Quoddy Bay, Standing alone In my suit of stone.'" -Taken from the book, "Eastport and Passamaquoddy A collection of historical and biographical sketches" compiled by William Henry Kilby, 1888.

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1935.
