Franklin Roosevelt schooner in Lubec Narrows, 1936, 1936

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

The schooner Sewanna was owned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and docked at his summer home on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Here she is sailing into Cobscook Bay through Lubec Channel, the “Narrows,” passing Campobello’s Mulholland Light. While it is impossible to identify the individuals on board even with extreme enlargement, it is known that Roosevelt sons James, John, and Franklin Jr. accompanied their father on these sailings. President Roosevelt may be the seated figure fourth from the stern. These July 1936 outings are well documented by the press in both still and motion pictures, but this photograph, taken from Lubec village, appears to be a local Lubec amateur’s work.
