Fox pelts in rigging of 'Bowdoin,' Baffin Island, 1922
During the long Arctic winter, the men on Donald MacMillan's crew aboard the schooner Bowdoin hunted for fresh meat and valuable furs. Here, fox pelts hang from the rigging to cure. A plankton net used for scientific sampling can be seen at left. During her first Arctic expedition in 1921-1922, the schooner was iced in for over eight months at southern Baffin Island. The schooner served as home while the men explored and conducted scientific studies.
