This fabric valentine sent by Capt. Alonzo Soule to his wife Deborah S. Soule says: "From my heart, I wish you happiness." On the back is handwritten "To Wify."
Alonzo Soule and Deborah Sinnett Orr, who had been a school teacher on Crotch (Cliff) Island when she was young, married on January 4th, 1863; they had nine children. Deborah was born in 1843, the daughter of Stephen and Abigail Orr.
Captain Soule was born in 1839 to Elizabeth and Elijah Soule on Great Chebeague Island, and was captain of the bark Fannie H. Loring.
He was lost at sea in November of 1883.
