Tucker Smokehouse, Lubec, ca. 1930

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

A typical smokehouse during Lubec's heyday. The fixed ventilator runs the length of the roof peak. Air-dried herring hanging from wooden stringers were loaded in the smokehouse and smoked from fires smoldering on gravel. Note supply of logs apparently intended as firewood, and the window-like doors on the smokehouse side which allowed setting of a draft.
