Map of the Georges River, Thomaston, Maine 2009

Contributed by Thomaston Historical Society

Description

This small sketch depicts the town of Thomaston in its proximity to the Georges River. At its inland location on a protected deep-channel river, the area was ideal for shipbuilding. A red line indicates where numerous shipyards were located throughout the 19th century. At one time, ships were built as far inland as Warren and floated downstream on high tides. A drawbridge over the river in Thomaston allowed passage of ships until it was no longer financially profitable for Warren shipbuilders to continue. As lumber became scarce in the early 19th century, Warren shipbuilders relocated their businesses to Thomaston.
