Senator Edmund S. Muskie, a Maine Democrat is portrayed in his "Mr. Clean" persona, a nickname he earned for battling giants to gain passage of clean air and clean water acts.
The title of the cartoon was "Can Mr. Clean Fell the Dirty Giant?" It was published in the Maine Sunday Telegram Feb. 25, 1968.
