John Marshall Brown letter from Hartwood, Va., 1862
John Marshall Brown of Portland wrote to his sister Ellen (Nellie) from a camp in Hartwood, Virginia, during the Civil War.
He describes the rainy weather, the mud, and tells her he and his fellow soldiers had been telling ghost stories to amuse themselves in the dreary conditions.
