Description

In the fall of 1861, Black Hawk Putnam of Houlton raised Co. E of the 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment. He was mustered in as a captain on October 31, 1861.

Injured at Middletown, Virginia, in May 1862, Putnam served as a recruiter from July 30 to Sept. 25, 1862. He resigned from the service and was honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1863.
