Crank axle, ca. 1900

Contributed by Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum

Description

A crank axle used for the rear axle on jigger, sloven or Taber drop axle wagons. Crank axle construction lowered the freight bed, giving the wagon a lower center of gravity than traditional wagons for more efficient use of the horsesÂ’ work. The lower height made it easier to load.
