President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) waves his hat to an excited crowd outside the home of Thomas B. Reed in Portland.
Roosevelt was president from 1901-1909. He was William McKinley's vice president, elected in 1900. McKinley was assassinated and died on Sept. 14, 1901. Roosevelt became president.
Thomas Brackett Reed (1839-1902) served in the U.S. House from 1877-1899. He was Speaker of the House from 1889-1891 and 1895 until his resignation in 1899.
