Henry Thurston Clark, a Portland native, who later worked in Bangor, then in Westbrook, demonstrated that baggage could be checked and travel by rail from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
He shipped baggage in 1872 and 1873 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to San Francisco and back. In 1873, the valise returned from San Francisco in eight days.
