Description
Evelyn Florence Dunham (1902-1971) of Bucksport was an accomplished pilot. The first Maine woman to receive her pilot’s license, she was an active member of the Queen City Flying Club in nearby Bangor. Made of leather, the jacket is lined with cotton fleece. In the 1930s, Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at Blodgett Tanning Company in Bucksport. Perhaps the jacket’s leather came from her employer. Metal medallions on each of the coat’s lapels include Evelyn's first initial and last name, one with a winged United States seal.
The Queen City Flying Club was the first of its kind in Maine. From its inception, the club included both men and women. Evelyn served as its secretary during the 1930s. Exactly why Bangor is called the Queen City is lost to history. Some attribute the moniker, which reaches back to the late 1800s, to its opulent mid-19th century architecture, supported through a booming lumber industry. There are many Queen Cities throughout the United States, often with a geographic designation attached. Bangor, Maine is the “Queen City of the East.”
