Sgt. Horace White on Battle of Winchester, 1862

Description
Sgt. Horace White of Co. E, 1st Maine Cavalry wrote to his mother in Houlton to report on the "disaster to the Maine Cavalry." He described the battle and his horse getting shot out from under him. He was not injured.
He ran into the woods with other soldiers and lay in a field for about three hours to avoid any enemy attention. He wrote that he lost all of his clothing and other items except what he was wearing. Everything else had been fastened to his saddle.
The battle was fought on May 25, 1862, and was won by the Confederates under Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson.
