Description

Marshall Phillips of the 5th Maine Regiment, wrote from Washington, D.C., to his wife, Diana, in Auburn on April 21, 1865, about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

He called it "the most horrible Murder that ever was committed in the United States."

Phillips had enlisted in May 1861 and served until 1865.
