Description

Writing to his wife, Diana, in Auburn, Marshall Phillips of the 5th Maine Regiment assured her he was still alive and not wounded.

He reported the regiment has had eight days of continued fighting as of May 11, 1864, and when he continued the letter two days later, they were still fighting.

He wrote of the May 10 battle, "Dear wife I did not expect to ever come out a live but by the blessings of god I am yet alive."

He described May 13 as the "most suvier musktry fight" of the nine days.
