Description

A shoemaker from Auburn, Marshall Phillips enlisted in the 5th Maine Infantry on May 8, 1861. He was 38 years old.

He wrote to his wife, Diana, from Fredericksburg, Virginia, describing the encounters with the Confederate army.

He wrote that it was "very inconvenient for me to write I have to sit down on the ground with the wind blowing around me with my equipments on me and my gun by my side."

He also wrote, "keep up your old motto hope for the best."
